8 Best Games Coming in August
The whirlwind of E3 2017 is behind us, meaning we have plenty of confirmed release dates for the rest of the year. Although many exciting titles have been pushed into the list of the games for 2018, some are still on the way in 2017.
We have sifted through all the PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch games that arrive in August and pick 8 best ones. We present you with the most exciting titles coming in the near future, with the exact release date so that you can calculate how many days left until you can finally get your desired gem.
Whether these games are innovative new ideas, brilliant remasters, or highly anticipated sequels, we cannot wait to play them. Here are the best titles set to come out in August 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
Tacoma
Release Date: August 2, 2017
Platforms: Xbox One, PC
No, this is not a Toyota pickup truck simulator as you might have guessed. Tacoma is the new project from the Fullbright studio that made a serious wave with its debut indie game Gone Home.
Here they once again brought a narrative-rich, combat-free exploration with the first-person view, but this time instead of taking place in 1995 Oregon, the story unfolds aboard a vacant space station where you will explore corridors in zero-gravity while replaying holographic recordings of the former inhabitants’ memories. You can pause, rewind, and fast-forward the recordings, explore from different angles and hunt down clues to help you progress.
The Fullbright studio looks to expand on the walking simulator format in a gorgeous and eerily empty sci-fi setting. Although Gone Home set a pretty high bar, Tacoma could be just as stirring.
We expect the game to be thoughtful, intelligent, and emotionally impactful.
Agents of Mayhem
Release Date: August 15, 2017
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC
Agents of Mayhem is the new title from Volition, the people who gave us the crass glory of Saints Row. This time they come up with this new riff on the superhero game, which is basically a rebrand of Saints Row, but with the fantastical element of that last game taken to absurd extremes.
The adult humor and over the top action are still there, but the new direction has given the studio an opportunity to overstep other pre-existing conventions of the series. It has a more cartoony look than the Saints Row games, and a near-future pseudo-superhero setting reminiscent of Overwatch.
You can seamlessly switch between controlling the 12 characters, pick three at a time and equip yourself with a new set of superpowers and weapons. The game's three heroes use their skills to take on the bad guys, browsing through an open-world landscape filled with plenty of action.
Anyone with interest in blowing things up and traversing the city with jetpack-powered style will probably want to keep an eye on this game.
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Release Date: August 22, 2017 Platforms: PS4
Platforms: PS4
Uncharted: The Lost Legacy is somewhere between DLC and a full title. It leaves Nathan Drake behind and follows Chloe who teams up with Nadine Ross to track down an ancient Indian artifact. You don’t have to own the original Uncharted 4 to play it as The Lost Legacy is a stand-alone game with its own story.
Uncharted 4 was one of the best games in 2016, so the idea of a new story in the same world is enough to get us excited.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle
Release Date: August 29, 2017
Platforms: Switch
This bizarre mixture of the most hyperactive creatures in the Rayman universe and Mario’s Mushroom Kingdom is as wonderfully weird as you could imagine. The off-the-wall crossover somehow complements the strategy of the turn-based battles, which emphasize on cleverly positioning your party members.
The game even has Shigeru Miyamoto's blessing — he specifically asked Ubisoft to "try to make a Mario game that has never been made before." Well, it seems like the mission is accomplished.
Rather than a cheap cash-in, the game looks like a labor of love, pairing the best of the Mushroom Kingdom and Rabbids' slapstick sensibility, and mixing them with the tactical combat of XCOM.
We can’t wait to see how battle tactics are going to fit for the mustachioed plumber.
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
Release Date: August 8, 2017
Platforms: PS4, PC
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is the new title from Ninja Theory, the studio that has a knack for crafting cult classic action games which don’t seem to be appreciated enough: Enslaved, Heavenly Sword, DmC. Hopefully, Hellblade will break into the mainstream so that more gamers can appreciate the kinetic melee clashes and lifelike face mocap.
The Hellblade’s story is steeped in Norse mythology and revolves around the Celtic warrior Sensua who deals with psychological trauma, battling her inner demons. And these demons sound like they are going to manifest themselves as actual enemies you’ll need to take out.
In this brutal journey into myth and madness, you will fight for the soul of your dead lover.
Sonic Mania
Release Date: August 15, 2017
Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC
Sonic Mania seems to be the culmination of what fans have wanted from their favorite blue hedgehog for years. He returns to his spin-dashing, ring-collecting roots established in his 1990s glory days.
Sonic Mania is an all-new sidescrolling crusade against vicious Dr. Robotnik, designed with ravishing sprite work that evokes the game with an extra layer of polish. The gameplay framework is classic Sonic, but each level is full of fresh designs and unique obstacles that mix things up nicely. Plus, you can play as Sonic, Knuckles, or Tails on every major platform.
This looks like the ideal fusion of nostalgia and newness that we've been waiting to see from Sega's mascot.
Yakuza Kiwami
Release Date: August 29, 2017
Platforms: PS4
If you haven’t ever enjoyed the Japanese nightlife and criminal world of the Yakuza games, you’ve been definitely missing out. Yakuza Kiwami is the perfect introduction to the long-running gaming series. Following the Yakuza 0, a prequel to the first game, Yakuza Kiwami is a polished remake of the original PS2 game that introduced us to Kazuma Kiryu and his gangster squad.
The graphics have been heavily improved, the neo-noir story has been cleared up by getting a resolution to some loose ends, and the ability to switch Kiryu’s fighting styles returns from Yakuza 0.
Yakuza Kiwami should be a fantastic way to find an explanation why this Sega series has such a devoted cult following.
Absolver
Release Date: PS4, PC
Platforms: August 29, 2017
Absolver is an online fighting game which is sort of a mix of Dark Souls, Destiny, and kung fu. You’re going to build your own combos and learn from both your friends and enemies. It features an ornate armor clashing in beautifully animated hand-to-hand combat, which is truly unique from other games of such kind.
You'll start with a limited number of moves, but as you progress in the game, you gain more by watching your opponents use new ones against you. By blocking or countering those moves, you can learn them even quicker. Another option is to make friends with a higher level player and then ask them to be your in-game mentor. They’ll be able to teach you new moves, which you can then pass down to a mentee of your own, and so on and so on.
Did we mention your most anticipated game coming in August? We’d love to hear from you in the comments section.
